One day, a man went for a walk along the beachfront and onto a pier that jutted out far into the water. There were a number of people fishing off the pier, including one man who seemed to be rather successful. He was catching fish after fish, and the walker stopped to admire his craft.

He soon noticed that the behaviour of the fisherman was rather odd. Every time he caught a fish, he would quickly measure its length, and on the basis of this, make a decision about the fish. Every time he caught and measured a big fish, he would throw it back into the sea; every time he caught a small one, he would put it into his basket.

Eventually the observer could take no more as his curiosity overcame his natural reserve not to talk to anyone unless formally introduced (bad form apparently). He asked the man why he was keeping the ‘titchies’ and discarding the ‘biggies’. The fisherman replied, “Well, you see, my frying pan is only 10 inches in diameter.”

One of the names by which we know God is ‘Almighty’. That means all-powerful, omnipotent, irresistible, invincible. His Word promises that His plans for us are plans to prosper and mature us. If He is who He is, then His plans for us are ‘biggies’. Yet, too often, our picture of God is small and emaciated. Often too, we see ourselves as people of little worth or significance. The result is that we perceive of our world, our futures and our plans in terms of the ‘titchies’.

May God open our eyes to His reality to see the plans He has for us. May He also give us the courage to take Him at His word and lead us into the great big adventure of faith.
