Fund Raising
Fund raising activities are a part of Church life nowadays and in Polmont we organise these activities with fellowship and enjoyment for people of all ages. In 2009, the fund raising events were well supported by members of the Church, the local community, and often visitors from further afield, and the committee would like to thank all who supported the various events. A total of almost £8000 was raised throughout the year, initially for the Stained Glass Windows Fund, then the Dry Rot Fund.
Looking ahead to 2010 Programme
This year will be a quieter year for activities after the excitement of our major event last year.
March saw the annual quiz, which had everyone surfing the web and searching the reference books in the libraries for the answers. The Theme this year was Castles of Scotland – are there really all these castles in Scotland? YES, and many hundreds more. The answers can be found on this website under the new edition of Twinspire no. 29. One person had all the answers correct with 3 runners-up only having one answer wrong. Congratulations to everyone who took part.
Towards the end of March we held a ‘Supper for Sandra’ in honour of Sandra Reid, our organist, who was retiring after almost 17 years in post. This was an informal evening with a finger buffet and lots of delicious “puddings” which Sandra had specially requested! Almost 70 people attended, and the proceeds are going to the Dry Rot Fund in Sandra’s name. See the ‘News’ page of this website for a few photos of the evening.
COMING VERY SOON!!
April sees a Books and Bric-a-Brac Sale in the Church Hall on Saturday 10th April from 10.00am till 12noon, admission free. Items from the Victorian Fayre’s nearly new stall will be available, as well as the usual selection of books and assorted bric-a-brac. If you are able to donate any goods for this event, please contact any member of the fundraising committee, Kirk Session, Congregational Board, or telephone Alex Watson (714493) or Bill Anderson (711882). The hall will also be open on Friday 9th April from 2-4pm to receive goods. This may be your chance to have a spring-clean!
No other events are planned, at the moment, until October, when our annual Ceilidh will be held on Saturday 23rd October in the Greenpark Centre. The Scottish Ceilidh Band is again booked for this event.
In November, it is planned to hold a Church Concert on Saturday 6th November, along the same lines as the one held in 2008. Lorna Farquhar will be arranging the programme and would be delighted to hear from talented artistes in the congregation.
The final event of the year is another favourite with many, the Come Carolling Concert by Grangemouth Choral Society. This will be held in the Church on Friday 10th December.
Looking back to 2009 Programme
The Car Quiz in March attracted 145 entries and raised £557.
Concert by the Falkirk Caledonia Choir in March proved to be a hit with the audience.
The Auction in April raised £1280 and was a great example of team effort.
The annual Ceilidh in October in the Greenpark Centre with The Scottish Ceilidh Band cheered everyone up on a wild wet autumn evening.
The Victorian Christmas Weekend in December was the high point of the year. Taking place over 4 days, it began with the polished recitation of Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’ by the Minister. This was followed by the annual ‘Come Carolling’ Concert by the Grangemouth Choral Society. But the Victorian Fayre on the Saturday was the biggest attraction of the whole weekend, involving some 80 people dressed in Victorian costume and being officially opened by ‘Queen Victoria’ herself. Sunday saw the church service complete with a shortened Victorian sermon by the Minister. A wonderful weekend of fun and team spirit, well supported by the local community.
Throughout the year, the various organisations of the church hold events such as coffee mornings, floral art demos, fund raising concerts. Reports about these will be found on their own web pages.
