Ben Ledi Climb
Before the weather deteriorated for the winter, four of the boys attempted to climb Ben Ledi at Callendar. The theory regarding the weather was good, but unfortunately it did not tie in with the weather on the day. Stephen Gray, Kieran Johnston, Sam Muirhead and Calum Fraser persevered through mist, drizzle and gale force wind to within a few hundred feet, or to be modern, metres, from the summit before we had to turn back. Safety is always our first priority.
Queen’s Badge
In the Company Section, Queen’s Badge work has been progressing with a number of boys attending residential courses at Carronvale House, the National Headquarters. These courses are enjoyed by the boys and Alan Ward, one of our officers, takes some of the classes on the course.
National Masterteam
This competition kicks off in November and the boys will be back in action. Fraser Green will take over from Daniel Tran this year as Daniel now trains with the National Basketball Team on a Friday evening.
Junior Section
The theme for their programme this year is the Olympic games. It is rumoured that the officers went into secret training for the programme but we still have not confirmed if that is true or not. In the next few weeks a Hockey Coach is coming along to put the boys through their paces and give them an appreciation of the work involved in being a successful athlete. Anchor Boys
We have 30 boys coming along on a Thursday evening. A local dentist has visited to speak about the importance of cleaning their teeth, and a supplier of healthy food brought along a selection of different fruits and vegetables to let the boys sample them. The energy and enthusiasm has to be seen to be believedAt the end of November, they are going to the pantomime, ‘Babes in the Wood’, at Grangemouth Town Hall.
Fund Raisers
On Thursday, 10th November Cathy Anderson did a Christmas Floral Art Demonstration in the Church Hall for Company funds. The event was well attended and we made £340. Our thanks to Cathy, the Officers who organised it and of course everyone who came along.
One of our officers has come up with a way that allows anyone browsing on-line or purchasing on-line to raise money for the Company without having to spend any additional money. Just register with Easy Fundraising then use this page before you do Internet shopping and we will receive a donation. Also, if you use Polmont Easy Search instead of the likes of Google, the Company will receive 0.05p for each search. This may not sound a lot but there are a huge number of searches carried out.
Volunteers required
I am looking at the Company Section Programme for 2012. One possibility is to run a sports night every second Thursday after the Anchor Boys. We do not want this to be just a kick-about, but would like to arrange coaching for the boys. We have equipment for table tennis, badminton, volleyball and of course 5-a-side football. If anyone feels that they could coach a sport, or possibly know someone else who might be interested in helping out, please speak to Captain Derick Turner.
Motto: Sure and Steadfast
Object: "The advancement of Christ's kingdom among Boys and the promotion of habits of Obedience, Reverence, Discipline, Self-respect and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness."
The Boys' Brigade has been around for more than 110 years and is part of the boyhood experience of many adults. Our function is to serve today's young people. The Founder, Sir William Alexander Smith, set out the object of the brigade being "The Promotion of habits of Obedience, Reverence, Discipline, Self-Respect and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness" and that has not been changed.
The Boys' Brigade develops a boy's awareness of his own community and creates opportunities for service.
The Boys' Brigade develops latent leadership qualities so that boys become contributors to the life of their community - not just takers.
The Boys' Brigade encourages boys to get involved in their Company, their Church and the community, and this involvement means taking responsibility for what happens.
The Boys' Brigade does not confine itself to well motivated and properous young people. It offers support and interest to the less fortunate and recognises the value of adult interest as young people develop.
The Boys' Brigade is staffed by unpaid officers with only a small core of full time staff. The officers give of their time to provide the activities within our local unit - the Company, which itself is part of the local Church.
