If you have an Advent Wreath - here is a short reading and ceremony before lighting your candle today.

As our nights grow longer and our days grow short, we look on these earthly signs -- light and green branches -- and remember God's promise to our world: Christ, our Light and our Hope, will come. The Evergreens on the wreath stand for eternity and the first candle lit today is often known as the Prophet's candle. Listen to the words of Isaiah the prophet:
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. Isaiah Ch9 V2 NIV.

Listen to the Carol, Silent night, Holy Night"

Isaiah Ch11 v1 & 2
A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.

The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him — the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.

Prayer:
Dear Lord we thank you that the story of Jesus coming goes a long way back in the Bible so we know that You planned it to happen a long long time ago. Father we need to learn to rest in Your perfection of purpose and as we go through Advent together - help us to realise that you are with us always just as you were with Your people in the New Testament. Help us to consider and wonder at these things as we gaze upon the starlight in the universe. Grant us light in our Souls. Amen.

Here is a story or legend about the Glow-worm. It is said that on the first Christmas day a sad little worm watched as all the other animals brought their gifts to the stable. No one noticed him for he was a dull grey colour and had nothing to give. Then a Jenny Wren, who was flying back and fore with hay to line the manger, dropped a small piece beside him. Slowly and with great effort he wriggled and twisted and made his way into the manger and gently laid the straw beside the infant Jesus. Then a wonderful thing happened. The radiant light of His halo touched the worm as he crept away and from that day on the Glow-Worm has carried its own light. I think that is a lovely story - you can think of the Glow-Worm as you put your lights on your Christmas Tree or light your Advent Candle. Read more about the Glow Worm here - Opens in a new window

Polmont Old Advent Tealights © Iain MorrisonTealight Advent Ring:
If you haven't got time to make the Advent Wreath that we showed you how to make yesterday - here is a simple one that you can make easily. You need a large white plate, and a packet of tealights - you can get packs of 50 very cheaply in the shops. You can also get coloured tealights and holders as well. You will also need some Blutack and some greenery from the garden or some holly - there is lots of holly in Polmont Woods, so you can go for a walk and get a small amount. Take 5 of the tealights and arrange them with one in the middle and 4 round about it - to make it really safe you can put a tiny blob of blutack on the base of each tealight. Remember you can colour the outside of the tealights using felt tips or you can put them in some holders and this makes it very safe. Then put the blue tack round the plate and stick on your holly or greenery. Your wreath is ready to use. Then you can replace the tealight every day as you use each candle - you will have plenty if you have bought the 50 pack. Remember to put it in a safe place such as in the centre of a table or on a shelf or mantlepiece. I hope you enjopy using your Advent candle wreath.
